Spring Hair checkup

Chances are many of you that live in colder climates put your hair away during the winter. During these months most likely you are relying on more protective styling, choosing to wear half wigs or braids to protect your hair from the colder elements. Now with the spring season in full swing, now is the time to observe your hair and analyze any difficulties you are experiencing and work on correcting these problems.

Issue 1 - Breakage
After washing your hair, do you find clumps of hair in your hands? It does depend on how often you comb and detangle your hair, so don't be overly alarmed. Try picking up individual strands and study them. Do you find that most of the length of your own hair has a small bulb attached? Keep in mind this is normal and the bulb represents that you have healthy hair.

Do you find broken pieces and split ends? If this is the case, I would consider this is to be an area of concern. I would highly recommend that you need to figure out what your hair needs are. One particular area to be pay close attention to; is making sure you are getting the proper balance of moisture and protein.

To help breakage and rebuild hair structure, try Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment which is a hardcore protein treatment which is only meant to be use at least every 6 weeks.

Issue 2 - Tangles
Does your hair easily tangle when trying to finger comb or section your hair off with your fingers? Natural African-American hair may form knots at the ends of the hair which may causes tangles.

Take your time when combing your hair. Detangling with damp/soaking wet hair with a lot of condition and a wide tooth comb works well for my hair. Comb from the ends of your hair to your scalp.

Issue 3 - Dryness
Dryness may occur from using excessive heating items such as flat irons or blow dryers, which could be a culprit, or by simply neglecting your hair. When your hair becomes damaged it makes it difficult to retain moisture.

Try using a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment once or twice a month. Avoid using harsh shampoos and only use natural based shampoos or cleansers. Even after applying moisturizing deep conditioning treatments or caring for the ends, you are noticing that they are still dry. At this point trimming them might be your only solution.

At night, twist or braid your damp hair and seal the ends with a bit of castor oil or olive oil. Also make sure you to tie your hair up at night or use a satin pillowcase. One other area not to overlook is keeping hydrated by ensuring that you are drinking enough water. This will help promote healthy hair by staying moisturized and keeping your hair from drying out.

Issue 4 - Frizzy Ends
When your hair is dry, do you find your ends bushy or crispy?

When there are split ends, knots or damage frizzy ends most likely will occur at this time. Using products with too much protein can lead to dry and brittle hair. It’s important to use a balance of moisturizing products and items containing protein such as reconstructions. When you cannot get rid of the ends, it might be time for a trim

If you observe any problems with your hair, now is the time to correct it, This way when summer time rolls in, you will be all ready to show off your beautiful, healthy hair!
